Been sooper dooper busy getting things ready for quite a few events I'll be at the next month or so. But, the artwork hasn't stopped, been doing all kinds of work. But lately it seems I've had some unconscious desire to draw up one eyed characters. I didn't even realize I was until I recently scanned a few pieces and found numerous cyclopian critters peering back at me.

This is a piece featuring an obscure Marvel Comics character called The Devil Slayer. The one eyed demon thingy he's facing is a creature of my own invention, whom I call GRON GROOGINONN, and I dig him so much I want to do more with him. Even have a full blown painting in mind which I want to feature him in.

DevilSlayerVSGronGrooginonn_small

One of them is a whole group of one eyed superheroes, which I call The Eyevengers. They go by the names such as The Red Eye, Pink Eye, Stink Eye,The Hypnotic Eye and Eyeracles. Just yet another concept going on in my head that may someday become a comic book.

RedEye01   RedEye02 HypnoticEye

Then there's a sketch card I did of the one eyed giant from the classic 1957 B-Movie flick THE CYCLOPS!

TheCyclops_small

A mock up cover for STOMPICIDE, a giant monster comic I also want to put together in the near future, featuring some old artwork I did.
StompicideMockCover01_small02

And then there is this guy,who technically has more than one eye(he's got eyes on his shoulders and his crotch), but, what the heck. Wanna do more with him in the future too, but here he is telling you that I will be at THE RAILROAD CITY COMIC CON in Durand, MI Sept. 21st and 22nd! So, come on down and get an eyeball full of artwork, paintings, sketch cards and more I will have on sale!

Should update this thingy, been awhile since I posted anything. Been busy with art shows, art walks, doctors and hospital visits and doing new artwork to get ready for the many events in September and October.

Not nearly enough commissions coming in though. Been pretty slow on that end and need to figure out a way to pick up da business. Ragzter needs some moola!
Usually the busy season is the Fall, people wanting things for X-Mas and such.
But why not beat the crowd!!I've got plenty of room for commissions, so hit me up for your artwork needs. I ain't too proud to beg. Don't make me post pictures of my sad, needy manlinered eyeballs. Then, I get really pitiful. And, you don't want that.

I've also been offering up some pretty cheapie deals on my Facebook, so keep your goggles glued for more!

Ok, enuff of the beggin'. On to the artwork!

Been doing some new sketchcards and comic book sketchcovers to try to sell at the events coming up. Check 'em out!

One of the coolest gigs I've had recently was doing sketch cards for CONTEMPORARY PIN-UPS card sets. Their recent set, which comes out very soon, is the Puzzle Jam set, where one artist does one side of the card, and another artist does the other side, making a cool puzzle set. It's fun and challenging to do work to compliment the other artists sketch. I got to work with some amazing artists on this set!
CONTEMPORARY PIN UPS has been one of the funnest and satisfying sketch card set I've worked with and I hope to continue working with them. Such a great set!

So, look out for this set. They will be some available at Wizard World Chicago and on Ebay on August 8th.

It's been a busy past few weeks, so mayhaps it be time for an update!

Mostly, on the art front, I've been getting things together for the upcoming events in the next few months.

Made a huge sign for convention appearances, just gotta figure out how to display it.

And took a weekend trip to Ann Arbor to see Neil Gaiman and some friends. Which inspired me to do an Endless piece.

I love Ann Arbor. Always have. Had some great times in the 80's out there, and this trip was a blast too, although, cuz I'm still suffering from kidney stones and a stent inside of me, I wasn't quite up to all the walking I used to do. One more lithotripsy and hopefully they'll pull that damn stent out of me and I can get some energy and exercise going. Plan on heading out to Ann Arbor more often.

I once used to use this LiveJournal in a more traditional sense. Spouting off nonsense and trying to be witty with random thoughts of the day, spouting out my frustrations and observations of the shambling life around me. I guess I thought I had something to say, some unique take on the world. Then, after years of this, I realized I wasn't all that clever, or  unique, or observant. That, and I'm a really shitty writer. I'm a king of ongoing sentences and bad spelling and have a limited vocabulary, which I want to broaden and make more colorful by using wanky words and made up sound effects.

See, that was just yet another sentence that went on too long and didn't really say anything.

So, I dropped that approach to LiveJournalling like a hot mic.Decided to just use it to post recent artworks and let the pictures do the talking. Plus, who the hell even uses LiveJournal anymore but Russians. And even they have just resorted to posting pictures only.

But lately, I've had a hankerin' to spout out nonsense again, in some feeble attempt to lay my fractured thoughts out on virtual paper. Mayhaps to clear my jumbled brain matter and in some hope that maybe I make sense to someone else out there. Just like my artwork.

Here's a piece of artwork I did recently so you have something to oogle at between the ramblings that you've skimmed over.
TeenagersScareTheShitOutOfMe_small

Maybe the sudden urge to write out my thoughts is because, since I have moved back to my hometown of Flint, Michigan, I feel like I speak a different language than those around me. Especially the people that work behind the counters of gas stations, doctors offices, pharmacies and retail stores. Take this example of a conversation I had this morning-

Me: Hello...

Video Game Store Clerk: ....(he just looks at me like I walked into his living room and he wasn't expecting any visitors, especially one he didn't know).

Me:(In a slightly louder and more commanding voice): HELLO

Video Game Store Clerk: ...

Me: Yeah, I'd like to special order a game for my wife

Video Game Store Clerk: (Looks at me like I speak Chinese or backwards or in some ancient tongue that's not used anymore) Uh, define "special order"...

Me: (Ok, now the blood pressure starts to rise in me because I can tell this dinklehead is unfamiliar with his own job duties) Well, it's when I give you a title of  a game, you look it up in your computer, then you order it,Then, when it comes in, you give me a call to tell me it has come in, then I return to the store and give you money for the game that I special ordered that has arrived and you then give me the game.

Video Game Store Clerk: Well, we don't do special orders. (pauses, looks at me like I asked him to order a Big Mac or something totally unrelated to the kind of merchandise that he carries in the store. Then, you can see a flicker of light ignite in his eyes. For which he then says snottingly( there's one of those words I made up I was telling you about earlier...) BUT we do Pre-Orders for games.

Me: Good. Then let's do that.

O.K. So, In his defense, I wasn't familiar with the terminology used in video game retail culture. I guess the term "special order" went out of fashion along with books, cd's and dvd's,the culture I AM familiar with, Seems that video game stores don't special order things. They Pre-Order things. But, being that this goober probably knows how his store works better than I do, should have politely explained that to me before he asked me to "define special order." That statement just wanted me to define how I'm gonna thrust my foot up his ass.

Before I continue, here's another recent piece of artwork I've done to break up the gooblygook of my rant.(and which has nothing to do with said gooblygook.

SaucermanSpeaks

So,before you think I fly off the handle over nothing, this kind of stuff happens on an almost daily basis when speaking to people that work in some sort of serving position in the businesses I have frequented lately. I never get a fast food, or for that matter, any food order back in the manner I requested. There's always something missing in the bag that I paid for .I've probably spent a total of $20 for air in the last month. I've had doctors, nurses or other types that work with twiddling around with organs on the inside of my body, ask me what procedure is to be done, instead of checking with the paperwork that has been laid out before their eyes.Which makes me really nervous, cuz they should know more than I what they are going to be doing. They're the doctor, not me. And it goes on and on and on.

Maybe it's just me. Maybe I've spent waaaayyyyyy too much time holed up in the house hunched over a drawing table, inhaling paint fumes and lost in my own creative thoughts so I've lost some communication skills or social skills. Or maybe I'm just a bitter angry guy that gets defensive when someone who I assume knows what they're doing goes to me for the answers they themselves should know being in their respective positions that they get a paycheck for every week and get upset with me when I call them on it.

Wow, that last sentence was a doozy of a run on sentence.

Guess that explains everything.

I should just go back to drawing my silly little pictures.

Finished up another Shadowgirl painting and I thought it may be neat to show the process of creating the painting. I tried something new with this one, instead of a usual canvas or artboard, I decided to try to paint on cloth. So I took an old t-shirt, cut out the back of it and put about 4 layers of clear gesso on it. Once it dried, it gives it a rubbery/leathery look and gives me a really smooth surface to paint on.
Then the basic painting of the Shadowgirl can begin. It took me quite a few alterations between the layers before I got it to where I wanted it to be. I would also spray water on the artwork between each session so I get that really cool drippy effect. I'm a big fan of drippy artwork and I like how you never really know how it's gonna turn out. That's part of the whole painting process that's really fun for me. Even though I have a basic idea of what I want a painting to look like, I always like to play around with it and let some random effects happen to it. Ya just never know what cool thing it may lead to. Plus, like I said, I just LOVE drippy paintings. Something about them I just love and which is why I'm not a big fan of super-realistic backgrounds and figures. I much prefer a stylistic approach to artwork. But that's just me. Ok, here's a few different versions of the piece in order of their applications.
007

hornedshadowgirl

hornedshadowgirl04

hornedshadowgirl05

Then, once I was happy with the figure,I added the hair. Some people prefer the figure without the hair, but I'm a big hair fan and I like how hair can frame a face and really bring out the features and energy in a piece.
hornedshadowgirl06

hornedshadowgirl07

Then I darken it all so it all looks cohesive. Since the previous pictures were taken with a cheap camera alot of the colors and details are lost,I scan it into Photoshop, and darkened it even further. Even the scanner didn't pic up alot of the colors. Sure, the actual painting looks slightly different, but the scanner can only pick up so much. Then I cropped it and got the final piece.
HornedShadowgirl_enhanced_small

And there you have it. Eventually I will come up with some unique way to hang and frame the actual painting. Since it's painted on cloth and has all these jagged edges,I'd like to do something different than just throw it in a glass frame. Thinking of having some painted branches from trees blown down from a recent storm to attach to the top and bottom and ,because it's so flexible, it would be hung like a scroll or banner. Once I get that done I'll post pics of it.

There ya go. Hope you enjoyed seeing the process of one of my new paintings. I'm putting together Shadowgirl paintings for a possible gallery show in September here in Flint,MI and The Horned Shadowgirl painting will surely be there, for display and for sale.

A major influence on me as a young kid was staying up late on Saturday Nights and watching THE GHOUL, a wacked out horror movie host. One of his re-accuring characters was Froggy, who was abused, blown up, beaten up and just plain suffered at the hands of The Ghoul. Dave Ivey was the man that made Froggy and was the Art Director for The Ghoul Show was at the convention and I got to chat with him and hang with Froggy for a bit. It was a huge thrill for me!

The snow has melted, the healthcare has started and the settling in to my life back into my hometown of Flint,MI has taken hold. At this moment I'm not prepared to go into too much detail about things til we get a more even grasp of it, so it's time to focus this blog on my artwork again. Between doctor's visits and other things, there hasn't been much time for as much artwork as I'd like, especially stuff to get done for the upcoming Flint Comix Con on April 13th. So, this next week will be pretty busy for me. I just hope I'm physically ready for the convention. I really need to be, because I love doing conventions so much and desperately need the contact with other comic & art fans and a day of escape from reality. So, I look forward to seeing you all there and meeting new fans of the genre.
Since it's a comic book convention and veering more towards family entertainment than the horror conventions, I've been trying to focus on doing more superhero and cartoon styled subject matter. Course, I find myself still drawn towards the weird and darker characters so, oops!
This weekend I'll be trying to get everything priced and organized for the convention, that way I have the rest of the week to finish up more pieces up for sale.

I figured it may be time for an update. There hasn't been much going on since the move to Michiganland other than getting situated and setting things in motion for the possible help in healthcare for the wife and I. Next Friday we have our first appointment in a series that hopefully will set us on the right track and get us back on our feet physically so we can continue to conquer the art shows, conventions and job market. It's taken a little longer than expected, but I have a good feeling that because of the support from you, friends & family, we may actually defeat this monster that has stood in our way.
In the meantime,it's been spent catching up on commissions, a few art jobs and getting things ready for the Flint Comix Con in mid-April. That, and getting used to the cold again. Yeep! It's been 15+ years since I've had to deal with this stuff, but at least I don't have to worry about getting attacked by scorpions in my sleep like I did in Texas. Plus, it's been so good being around my old friends and family again.

It's been a week now since we packed up and trekked across the country to end up back in my home town of Swartz Creek,MI. The drive was long but we made it without any problems thanks to Dan Thompson & Denise Dunlap, who went above and beyond to help us get here. Now, we've been trying to settle in and get organized before the next ordeal-switching everything over to the new address, getting state driver's licenses, and starting the paperwork to get the much needed healthcare for Stacey & I so we can be active members of society again. It's going to be a tough ride, but it must be done. We're back in civilization, with the support of family and friends to help make it happen. And, again, I can't thank the people enough who ordered artwork, commissions and who contributed to the funds to make it happen.
The Ragz studio is no more, but thanks to my buddy Roy and his sister Veronica, I have a space to plant my drawing table so I can get back to work drawing new projects, commissions and such. So, I AM OPEN FOR BUSINESS!! Yay!!
Anyone interested in artwork, or purchasing previous pieces, please feel free to contact me via my email at Ragzter@aol.com, or through my Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/Ragzdandelion
It's been an interesting mix of emotions being back in Michigan. Of course, there's the getting myself re-aquanted with the wintery cold stuffinz known as snow, which I haven't had to deal with for the past 15+ years. Yeep! My car wasn't made for that stuff, but it's cool to tool around and see some old familiar stuff peppered in between all the new stuff that has sprung up in the area over the years. Miss my old haunts though that have since disappeared, like good old Wyatt Earp Records. But, there's so many new places yet to be explored.
I haven't had much time to do any new art pieces, but starting Monday it's back to the drawing board and time to start slinging my pencil with new commissions and stuff to get ready for The Flint Comix Con in April, where I will be having a table to sell artwork, comics and stuff and meeting the comic fans of Flint! Can't wait!!

Having so much stuff and bad health makes a horrible combination, but the first stage of the move is almost done. Then comes the unpacking once we get there. I have a feeling it's gonna take a week to recover. Then, it's the long stressful ordeal of trying to get healthcare so that my wife and I can get back on track of conquering the world.
So, it may be a few days before I get plugged into the internets again, but I look forward to being amongst friends and family and being back in civilization. We'll be flat poor, but hopefully the commissions will start flying my way to keep us afloat til we get back into some real work.

One more week to go!
I'm about 75% boxed up,stressed beyond belief and anxious but excited at the same time to finally be out of this state. Gonna miss my studio though, one of the few things I like out here. But, I'll have another one of these days, til then, I'll have my little space for just a drawing table and computer, but also the companionship of my buddy Roy to make up for it. Roy has been my bud since High School, and, hell, if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have had many misadventures in a couple rock bands, a comedy troupe, moving to Las Vegas...the guy always seems to be the main motivator for all the big changes in my life. Give it up for Roy-woo hoo!!
I'm dying to do artwork, but gotta keep on keeping on the boxing up of my life so it's all set and ready to go. So, keep the commissions and purchasing of my artwork coming my way so I have lots of work to do once I get settled in and organized. If it wasn't for the work you all have given me I would've been far off from reaching this goal to get things taken care of for my wife & I. It's gonna be a long struggle ahead, but at least we'll be in a better place to make it happen.

It's late at night and I can't sleep. My mind is racing with thoughts about our move back to my home city of Flint,MI. The ordeals we'll have to face, the pain we'll hopefully overcome, the re-invention of ourselves, the overwhelming task of trying to figure out where to put all our stuff. The cold. Eep!

I start thinking about why I left that cold mundane city in the first place. The lack of passion and creativity that hung low in the air, how everyone stumbles around in circles, seemingly content to just go nowhere. The frustration of letting the struggle suck the life and spark out of it's residents. The complacency, the contentment in everyone's eyes without any challengers to break that Goddamn mold of Midwest values and lethargy.
I wish I had the power, the influence, the abilities to come back home and change it all. Or even be part of a rag tag gang of artists, musicians, writers, performers-whatever-that kicks Flint in the head and gets everyone off of their dulldrums to create and give birth to a new city, one that is unique and weird and fun and crazy-well, crazy in a good way, not in a way that gets you shot in a bar or street. Man, I wanna shake that place up and start a revolution. There's little sparks I see here and there, which makes me think I could actually be part of something that not only changes myself for the better, but the city I started out at.
But really. I'm just plain fucking bored. I'm bored of being sick. I'm bored of my wife not being well. I'm bored of things not changing for the better. And, I'm bored with moving everywhere trying to snatch a dream, much less trying to attain one.Moving all the stuff that keeps me from being bored sucks too. I'm getting to old to lug all this shit across the country.
So, Flint, don't fucking bore me. Let's make things happen. Help get me and my wife back on track, so we can make something happen where people actually want to live there. Re-invent yourself dammit. Seattle did it. Austin did it. You can to. But, don't be afraid to be different, to be inventive, to be weird and challenging. Let's get our freak on and make some damn funky music. Don't BORE ME!!!
Ok, got that out of my system. Most likely I'll read this tomorrow after some sleep and delete this because how corny it all reads.Or I'll be hurting too much to give a shit.
But maybe, it may spark someone to set things in motion and prove me wrong. I'm kinda counting on you to.
SCHLOCK ME!!
